Where \u003cem\u003eLunch Breaks\u003c\/em\u003e channeled the drum mojo of the late 1960s exclusively, \u003cem\u003eBackyard Breaks\u003c\/em\u003e explores a wider sonic timeline of drumming and recording. The late 1960s approach is revisited often, but this sophomore effort also captures the tighter, punchier and more focused sounds of the mid and late 1970s, as well as some of the less orthodox rhythms and fills from those eras, giving the sampling producer a mixture of sounds to work with. Percussionist Ray May adds congas to a handful of tracks to mix things up and capture the b-boy spirit, while more options in the way of mikes, drum kits, snares and cymbals – in addition to more head room with the recording levels for more producer control - make \u003cem\u003eBackyard Breaks\u003c\/em\u003e a well-rounded follow-up to its predecessor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBetween the recording of \u003cem\u003eLunch Breaks\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eBackyard Breaks\u003c\/em\u003e, J-Zone has done studio drumming and sample replays for Danger Mouse, Marco Polo, RA the Rugged Man, Czarface (7L \u0026amp; Esoteric and Inspektah Deck), Apathy and many others, as well as providing drum tracks for film scores like CNN’s \u003cem\u003eFresh Dressed\u003c\/em\u003e and the Stretch and Bobbito Documentary.
